Respect as a Birth Right
We have indeed honoured the Children of Adam, and provided forthem means of transportation on land and sea, and given themwholesome food and exalted them high above the greater part ofOur creation. (THE QURAN 17: 70)
THE above mentioned verse shows that man by his very creationdeserves regard and respect. This respect is man’s naturalbirthright, regardless of which community he belongs to.
According to a Hadith: “That person is not one of us who is not mercifulto our youngsters and respectful to our elders.” According to anotherHadith the Prophet Muhammad said: “One who believes in God and theLast Day must honour his neighbours; one who believes in God and theLast Day must honour his guests.”
There are a number of such commands to the believers in the Quranand the Hadith which lay great stress on showing due respect to theservants of God. For, this is an important area in which we are actuallybeing tested in our faith in God. Our loveand devotion for God finds expression in thisworld in the form of our relations with otherhuman beings. One who is a true believer hasan inner urge to love God’s servants.
Our love anddevotion for Godfinds expression inthis world in the formof our relations withother human beings.One who is a truebeliever has an innerurge to love God’sservants.
Respect for mankind is one of the basicteachings of Islam. Everyone whether of one’sown religion or of any other religious tradition,whether belonging to one community oranother to a friendly group or a group ofstrangers, is worthy of respect. According tothe teachings of Islam human beings are tobe respected despite their differences. Evenwhere antagonism is displayed, we have to adopt the way of avoidanceof conflict and continue to show respectful behaviour. In the eyes ofIslam, all human beings are equal and deserve our respect.
